A HIDDEN HISTORY OF THE AVANT-GARDE

In the annals of a pivotal institution like the Tibor de Nagy Gallery there are always anecdotes or images that become famous and seem to stand for their entire moment. They are convenient, irresistibly repeated, and they weigh on the hearts and minds of those who come after them with the authority of art itself. One such anecdote was born in April 1953 when Frank O’Hara, working that day at the front desk in the lobby of the Museum of Modern Art, telephoned his friend Grace Hartigan with the news that the museum director Alfred Barr and curator Dorothy Miller had just alighted from a cab and were struggling to get through the revolving door with her painting The Persian Jacket held between them. It was the final day of Hartigan’s third solo exhibition at Tibor de Nagy—the discouraging final day, because she had not sold one item from the show. In fact, she had sold only a single painting in the two and one-half years since she joined the gallery at its inception in November 1950. Suddenly, although Barr and Miller were at last forced to give up their struggle and take the painting through a side door, she was about to realize an artist’s dream. Her work was entering the museum.
